VINTAGE 2019
JAMES SUCKLING, Austria transition report vintage 2019: 95 points
Ripe and spicy with a touch of dried pear alongside the fresh peach, this dry riesling makes a serious statement. Lots of underplayed power here, the acidity quite supple at the long spicy finish that’s well supported by positive tannins.
VINTAGE 2018
JANCIS ROBINSON, tasting 1/9/2020: rating 17
Vibrant yellow fruits, deep, golden in aroma and flavour. Chewy, almost tannic in texture. All so embryonic and needing time in bottle. Even so, utterly moreish and mouth-wateringly long. The acidity seems extreme now but there’s the flesh to clothe it in the longer term.
JAMES SUCKLING: Score 96
Serious intensity here, but also subtlety, in the form of lemon meringue, apple curd, saffron, cardamom, beeswax and honeysuckle. Hints of gunflint. Full-bodied, dense and concentrated, yet agile, delicate and racy. The edgy, flinty acidity cuts through the mouth-filling peaches with remarkable precision.

FALSTAFF: THE ULTIMATE WINE GUIDE, rating 95
Medium green-yellow with silver highlights. Vineyard peach, grapefruit zest and subtle carambola over a background of blossom honey and soft herbal spice. Juicy acid and salty minerals tightly frame the multifaceted, firm body. The complex finish features velvety papaya fruit. Tremendous potential for further development and aging.

Gobelsburg’s 2018 Ried Heiligenstein 1ÖTW opens with a very clear, bright, fresh and flinty, very elegant and almost coolish bouquet, like almost no other Heiligenstein of this vintage. Round and elegant on the palate, this is a bright and refined, highly elegant and crystalline Heiligenstein with an intense, piquant and mineral finish.

Moosbrugger’s Riesling 2017 Zöbing Ried Heiligenstein “1ÖTW” has an intense yellow-golden color and opens with a deep and intense, elegant bouquet with very ripe and concentrated but precise and spicy-scented fruit aromas. Full-bodied and round on the palate, this elegant, complex and persistent Heiligenstein reveals intense and balanced fruit with lingering crystalline acidity and stimulating salinity. Lovely mineral in the finish. This is a very elegant and refined, terroir-driven Heiligenstein with remarkably purity and length. Great style.
WINE SPECTATOR INSIDER 11/2018: Rating 93
An effusive white, filled with Asian spice details and plush notes of ripe pear and nectarine. Open-textured and beautifully crafted, with a rich tapestry of flavors and aromas. Polished and impressive on the finish, with an echoing aftertaste of cream and anise. Riesling. Drink now through 2028.
JAMES SUCKLING.COM: Rating 95
A rich and precise wine with a lot of textural complexity and very clean minerals that drive the long finish. Drink or hold.

This is still quite yeasty, but in a rather attractive way. Behind that yeasty creaminess, which will fade somewhat with time, is a great wine that is deep, firm and complex. The finish expands like a concertina until the minerality envelops you.
BLIND TASTED BY ANDREAS LARSSON: Rating 91
Clear light golden colour. Pure nose, fresh yellow fruit, citrus, lemongrass, some herbal notes. Medium weight palate with a crisp acidity, good grip with fresh yellow fruit notes and a long pure finish.

Bittersweet, subtly musky scents of iris and peony complement hints of honey and spice borne of botrytis. Silken-textured and expansive, the palate here delivers quince and ripe white peach enveloped in billowing floral perfume and set against a background of wet stone, leading to a soothingly lingering yet tinglingly citric and crystalline finish. This doesn’t display the degree of animation, complexity, salinity or primary juiciness of the remarkable corresponding Gaisberg, but still represents a superb success, especially in the context of its vintage.
WINE ADVOCATE/Robert Parker: Rating 92
The 2014 Riesling Heiligenstein 1ÖTW has green pepper, legumes and a touch of lime peel on the clear and attractively aromatic nose. This leads to a pure, very compact and salty palate. This is a firmly structured, densely woven and still closed Riesling with very good aging potential. I find it close to Gruner Veltliner because it is so peppery. The finish is pure and salty, full of tension and very long. Great grip. This is promising.
WINE ENTHUSIAST: Rating 92
There is a citrus purity on the nose that suggests fresh lemon juice, but it is tempered by some spice, like that of still-green Seville orange rind. The palate is streamlined and equally pure, it has an almost cleansing quality. This is luminous and delicious and slips down far too easily.
WINESTATE: 4/5 Stars
A fine and very pretty style of Riesling with gentle citrus aromas, a hint of botrytis and a finely textured palate with mouthfilling flavours.

VIKTOR SIEGL:
Almost exotic fruit flair, practically leaps from the glass with pineapple and Williams pear, incredibly penetrating and fine-pored, spirited, indeed peppery; multilayered extracted sweetness, smooth texture and elegantly drawn, long very racy finish, an exemplary Riesling from the Kamptal with a long life to look forward to!
WINE SPECTATOR: Rating 93
Rich and spicy, with a complex mix of dried mango, baked pineapple and ripe melon flavors, knit together by fresh acidity. Creamy notes extend into the finish, offering layers of honey and tarragon. Drink now through 2022.
PARKER / WINE ADVOCATE: Rating 90
I tasted the 2013 Riesling Heiligenstein twice, once at the end of August in Schloss Grafenegg when it was wild and cryptic and left me with a question mark regarding its further development. I tasted the wine again a month later at home when it offered a deep, dense, complex and mineral bouquet with lime aromas over crushed rocks but still remained closed. Very intense and mineral on the palate, this rich, full-bodied and powerful wine was still wild and not developed, tasted edgy and austere, but also quoted ripe peach and nectarines in the persistent, slightly drying aftertaste. Undoubtedly this is a deep, elegant and promising Riesling with an impressive length though it is far away of being fully developed. It’s on its way and so has to be the score, which shall be higher in a year or more. Drink: 2019-2026

DECANTER:
Heiligenstein is a geological oddity, different to its surroundings and apparently unique in Europe; it’s one of those rare terroirs that unmistakably marks its wines. Riesling grows on the dry, rocky, upper terraces, and Gobelsburg’s winemaking brings out all the austere purity, the saltiness, tension and limpidity of the site. Imagine a filigree laser beam. PARKER: Rating 92
A site-typical bittersweet as well as musky floral perfume suggestive of iris, gentian and peony wafts from the glass of Schloss Gobelsburg’s 2012 Riesling Heiligenstein and then across a glycerol-rich palate of juicy apple tinged moss and underlain with wet stone. Less strikingly transparent or ingratiatingly juicy than a couple of its immediate siblings, this, nonetheless, delivers superb sheer length featuring striking liquid florality, and ought to merit following through at least 2020.
WINE ENTHUSIAST: Rating 94
Tight and slender on the palate, it has green and yelllow citrus flavors in the foreground.Lime and grapefruit peel appear first, followed by stirrings of pink grapefruit flesh. It all adds up to a wine that offers concentration and depth plus exquisite purity.
VIKTOR SIEGL:
Cask sample: A basket of ripe fruit aromas immediately spring forth: components of classic apple varieties followed by banana and pineapple, and some wild honey notes in the background. Rich and round with plenty of power and depth. Supple, firm and showing generous extract and a touch of gingerbread. Well balanced with ample acidity and precise definition. A dream Riesling – probably the best ever of the modern Gobelsburg era!
