RIED STEINSETZ KAMPTAL
Ried (single vineyard, cru) Steinsetz is situated south of the castle just outside of the village Gobelsburg and is marked by sedimentation material of Danube and Traisen.
Depending on the size of the flow smaller or larger pebbles – mostly quartzite – were deposited. The sediments are covered by loess of 10 to 50 cm.

From a cooler, late-ripening vineyard on gravelly soils, the Gobelsburger 2018 Ried Steinsetz offers a deep, intense and elegant, spicy and flinty bouquet of ripe and concentrated white fruits and broken stones. Full-bodied, intense and firmly structured, this is an expressive, elegant and sustainable Veltliner with remarkable purity and finesse as well as a promising phenol structure that gives good, food-friendly tension.

A panoply of pear notes: the freshly cut peel of Conference, the juicy flesh of Bartlett, the scented fruitfulness of Comice. These full-fruited notes dominate nose and palate beautifully and are deftly framed with zesty lemon freshness. Tons of flavor in a light-bodied but very convincing package.

STEPHEN BROOK: Rating 91
An exotic style from this top producer, with tropical fruit and apple compote on the nose. It´s plump and juicy, full-bodied and spicy, with exuberance and concentration, while the finish is long and mineral.

VINOUS/David Schildknecht: Rating 92
This product of mid-November picking represents another of the small wonders of vintage 2014, inasmuch as it holds its own against its illustrious 2013 predecessor. Piquant green herbal aromas complement crab apple, fennel, lima bean and turnip on a polished, buoyant, brightly juicy palate. There are salivary-gland-tugging mineral elements here that defy naming but suggest oyster liquor as well as crystalline stoniness, and set up a dynamic, sustained finishing interplay with the wine’s fruit and vegetable elements.
WINE ENTHUSIAST: Rating 91
This is a very zesty Grüner where yeasty, earthy notes are completely cut through with the wonderful, bracing freshness of grapefruit peel. The more usual fruit of green pears lurks underneath but the overall picture is one of lip-smacking refreshment. Wonderfully clean and zingy finish.
WINESTATE: 4/5 Stars
Almost tropical on the nose with great varietal fruit length on the palate. More of a savoury style that`s quite high in alcohol.

VINTAGE 2013
VIKTOR SIEGL:
Vital and dignified, penetrating play of fruits and fine aroma of blossoms, pinch of pepper; impressively full-bodied, again spicy, some citrus and strong Veltliner pepperiness, nervous structure, harmonious.
PARKER / WINE ADVOCATE: Rating 89
From a Gobelsburg plateau clutered with pebbles big as a fist, the 2013 Grüner Veltliner Steinsetz is a clear and aromatic classic of the variety with tobacco leafs, peas, apples, white pepper powder and floral aromas on the nose followed by a full-bodied and piquant palate with juicy cox orange aromas and a marked acidity. Quite salty in the aftertaste this is a quite powerful wine to be served from the decanter in its first year. Drink: 2015-2020

Apple pips and peach kernel piquancy as well as a decidedly stony note and a firm if fine-grained feel lend a certain austerity to the Gobelsburg 2012 Gruner Veltliner Steinsetz, but there is ample primary juiciness of mint-infused apple and melon through which seems to shimmer a diversity of mineral matter. Ester-rich, high-toned aromas here encompass kirsch and mirabelle distillates, which reprise as shadows to a lingering finish. Plan to follow this through at least 2018.
SWA/Sommelier Wine Awards: Gold Medal
Aromatic and gastronomic inspiration from Schloss Gobelsburg with this. Apricot notes mix with white spice, dill, green pepper and acacia flowers, while the palate sports flavours of melon and pears, minerals and spice. “I’d pair this with crab or sole with lemongras” said a happy Michael Moore of Enigma 88, while The Vineyard at Stockcross’s Alan Holmes chose pork with sweet spices.

VIKTOR SIEGL:
Cask sample: Yellow fruit aromas immediately show on the nose – smooth and consistent, yet penetrating. Lively and spicy with a white pepper note. Also shows good body – very taut and dignified structure. A citrus tone just before the finish.
VINTAGE 2011
WINE&SPIRITS:
The best grüner veltliners of 2011 translate the ripeness of the vintage into a warm vibrancy of flavor, like this one, which Michael Moosbrugger pulled from 25-year old vines on gravelly loess not far from his winery. It has a plump yellow-peach succulence but it´s the spice – a rooty, earthy, gingery note – not that drives through a woofer. It holds its vibrant freshness for days, delicious with a hunk of pork belly.

Lively and svelte with hints of pink pepper and thyme; insistent temperament on the palate, pink grapefruit and Boskoop apples, irresistibly hearty flavours, elegantly intertwined. Packs an intense kick in the final third – possibly the finest Steinsetz to date.
