RIED RENNER KAMPTAL
Ried (single vineyard, cru) Renner is situated on the slope of the Ried Gaisberg Riesling terraces.
The soil structure here is getting deeper and is offering more retention for the wines. Beside loess a high proportion of erosion material from primary rock (brownish para-gneiss, amphibolite and mica) is the basement of this vineyard.

WINE ENTHUSIAST, tasting 3/1/2021: rating 96
Fresh yeast still plays uppermost in the aromatic register of this spicy wine. The palate, enhanced by slight spritz, then speaks of white pepper, crushed sage, lemon freshness and a subtle but insistent yeast. This is gorgeous, slender, savory and utterly moreish.
JANCIS ROBINSON, tasting 1/9/2020: rating 17
This seems to have many facets: a creamy/lees gentle approach, plenty of pear fruit, packed with white pepper. Intense and expressive. There’s so much pepper here it grips your palate and becomes part of the texture. Power and finesse at the same time.

I love the precise balance of this rich and complex (also texturally) gruner veltliner, which glides over the palate, until you reach the tannins at the finish. Lovely white-fruit and delicate-spice aromas. Excellent aging potential.

Ripe and creamy, but with a touch of horseradish that really gives a kick, this is a very distinctive wine. Long, lively finish, in spite of he richness. Drink or hold.

Plenty of dried apple and pear with sliced mango and papaya character. Medium to full body, bright acidity and a clean and fresh finish. A beautiful close.
BLIND TASTED BY ANDREAS LARSSON: Rating 93
Bright light to medium golden colour. Pure nose, fresh pear and peach with ripe citrus and some floral hints. The palate is dense and fresh with vigorous fruit, fine extract, and a digest and very long finish packed with ripe yellow fruit.

Notions of ripe stone fruit are tempered by the herbal savor of arugula and watercress. There is something incredibly ripe at play, combined with something incredibly fresh. There also is a lightness of touch and a limpid intensity. The palate displays all of these things and adds a salty moreish element of yeast. What a wonderful, authentic expression of Grüner. Bravo!

Behind scents of crushed stone, ash and sea breeze mingled with lilac perfume on the nose emerge fresh green bean, apple, lime and gooseberry that anticipate this wine’s tart, taut palate impression—another case of 2014 suggesting a Grüner Veltliner–Riesling hybrid. A vivid sense of extract serves for buffering. Iodine and smoky Szechuan pepper lend invigoration to the succulently yet vivaciously sustained finish.
WINE ADVOCATE/Robert Parker: Rating 92
The 2014 Grüner Veltliner Renner 1ÖTW has intense and ripe fruit aromas on the nose, along with some spicy flavors. This Grüner is ripe and intense, very elegant and serious. Round and elegant on the palate, this full-bodied wine develops a good tension and structure combined with intensity and extract. This is powerful and promising.
WINE ENTHUSIAST: Rating 91
There’s an almost honeyed edge to the nose of this charming, composed wine. The sprightly palate is highlighted by a spritz of lemon here and there and the occasional flash of white pepper. This has a masterfully light touch.
WINESTATE: 4/5 Stars
Quite a savoury nose with a hint of stonefruit peeping through. Warming palate has crunchy pear and honey ice-cream flavours.

VIKTOR SIEGL:
Exuberant multivitamin juice-style fruit with a touch of grated nuts, describes a wide arc immediately followed by deep flavours; fruity-sweet and full-bodied but also very lively, mineral-saline notes before a long finish, another sure bet.
WINE SPECTATOR: Rating 92
Rich, ripe and full of luscious apple tart, pear compote and pineapple flavors, filled with plenty of creamy notes. Golden raisin and buttery pastry accents linger on the unctuous finish. Drink now through 2020.
PARKER / WINE ADVOCATE: Rating 90
The intense yellow 2013 Gruener Veltliner Renner from calcareous sandy silt soils is very clear and fruit intense on the nose indicating fresh yet delicate citrus flavors as well as ripe yellow-fleshed fruits. Quite rich, juicy and full-bodied on the palate, this is a powerful and slightly creamy textured Veltliner with a certain sweetness also due to its big and mighty body and intense fruit aromas. The acidity is quite piquant but cannot prevent the wine from a certain gravity. Drink: 2015-2024

Buying Guide 2016: 100 Best Wines of the Year – Austrias Best Grüner Veltliner Renner was planted in the 1950s with an old clone of Grüner Veltliner; the site lies at the foot of the Gaisberg, where the soil has eroded to create a deep well of loess, sand and stone. That rich earth is reflected in the bodacious ripeness of this wine, but for every drop of sweet, fleshy fruit, there’s an equally robust complement of minerality, saline and firm. The wine builds with gregarious energy, arms open wide, ready to meet a roast chicken and root vegetable tonight. Or cellar it, as it’s certain to age well.
PARKER: Rating 92
The Gobelsburg 2012 Gruner Veltliner Renner once again offers deeply concentrated and complex flavors, here focusing on roasted root vegetables (turnip, parsnip, celery root) garlanded with a bittersweet floral perfume mingled with sweetly smoky tobacco and suffused with crushed stone. Hints of lanolin and brown spices from barrel are nicely integrated into the baked richness of this bottling, which, nevertheless, does not preclude refreshing primary juiciness in a lingering finish. Plan to savor this beauty through at least 2022.
VIKTOR SIEGL:
Cask sample: Notes of hazelnut and orange peel aromas on the highly distinctive, seductive nose. Round and full-bodied with a lively animated side and a minerally, slightly salty finish. A model power-driven Veltliner in the medium category.
