RIED GRUB
KAMPTAL
Ried (single vineyard, cru) Grub is a basin between Ried Heiligenstein and Ried Gaisberg.
Slightly higher and wind protected the site opens to the south. 20.000 years ago – during the last glacier period – mammoth and reindeer hunters used it as a settling place. The soil consists of pure loess as well as remains of bones from the Stone Age period.

VINTAGE 2019
jamessuckling.com Austria´s excellent 2019 vintage report: rating 96
I love the interplay between the warm (ripe mirabelle) and cool (green bean) aromas in this classic Austrian high-end gruner veltliner. Good concentration and a bright, lively finish with some real complexity and tension.

The 2018 Kammern Ried Grub 1ÖTW opens with a clear and flinty, bright and aromatic bouquet with great elegance. The palate is pure, fresh and elegant, refined and balanced but with tension and finesse. A remarkably good, fine and elegant Veltliner for this difficult vintage.

WINE ADVOCATE/Robert Parker:Rating 91
The 2017 Kammern Ried Grub “1ÖTW” is super ripe and intense on the nose but still precise and elegant. Round, lush and salty-piquant on the palate, with lots of ripe pear and mirabelle flavors, this is an elegant and charming, really fine and balanced Grub Veltliner.
JAMESSUCKLING.COM: Rating 94
Ripe, deep and mellow with lots of snow-pea and mirabelle character, this is a really concentrated and well structured wine that makes a serious statement, without being at all loud. Stunning finish. Drink or hold.

Still a little closed on the nose. Plenty of sweet green vegetable and herbal character on the palate. Rich and concentrated yet with a light touch to the finish that pulls you back for more.

From cask, this already looked to be the star of the Schloss Gobelsburg’s 2014 Grüner Veltliner lineup and one of those improbable successes scored in the face of seasonal adversity. An amazing nose emphasizes violet and lily-of-the-valley perfume, sea breeze, pea tendril and fresh pear. Tart rhubarb joins the pear on an expansive, satiny, subtly oily yet bright and buoyant palate, while marine aromas blossom into saline-sweet, iodine-tinged suggestions of shrimp- and crab-shell reduction that set the salivary glands pumping. Lusciously fruity as well as intriguingly and mouthwateringly mineral, this wine’s complex finish incorporates smokiness and cyanic notes of pear pip.
WINE ADVOCATE/Robert Parker: Rating 91
Intense yellow in color, the 2014 Grüner Veltliner Grub 1ÖTW reveals very attractive stone fruit and lemon aromas, intermixed with mineral flavors on the impressively clear and fresh, very inviting bouquet. Full-bodied, round and fruity, this well-structured Grüner reveals an enormous power and minerality on the palate, along with peppery aromas. The finish is long and complex. An excellent Grüner.

VIKTOR SIEGL:
Multifaceted, but discreet, full greengage fruit and a hint of blood orange, but also moving in the direction of a Burgundy; spicy tobacco and delicate depth, concentrated and offering many details, chocolatey and long, really coats the mouth, extremely promising.
PARKER / WINE ADVOCATE: Rating 91
From the basin between Heiligenstein and Gaisberg the 2013 Grüner Veltliner Grub displays fresh and subtle aromas of ripe peach, citrus, loess, iron and legumes. On the palate there is an impressive mix of ripe and intense fruit, a stimulating transparency and piquancy and a salinity that goes through until the long and persistent, mineral finish. Fermented and aged in traditional large 2,500-liter barrels, this is a full-bodied, complex and very elegant wine of great expression and charm.

From a site promisingly situated beneath the intersection of Heiligenstein and Gaisberg, but featuring more loess and gravel than it does eroded Urgestein from above, the Moosbrugger’s 2012 Gruner Veltliner Grub easily redeems that promise. This site is prone to botrytis, he notes, but this year was utterly rot-free. Transparency of juicy white peach to nutty piquancy, herbal pungency and myriad stony and crystalline nuances characterize this polished and expansive yet buoyant bottling, whose sense of lift continues through a long, complexly layered finish. This is a wine that suggests Gruner Veltliner is second only to Riesling in its proclivity to deliver nuances that can only be described with mineral vocabulary. Subtle salinity, hints of iodine along with crustacean shell reduction lead to a veritable milking of the salivary glands. I would anticipate this continuing to captivate through at least 2025.
VIKTOR SIEGL:
Cask sample: This Veltliner, from a basin vineyard site, is full of flavour and concentration: physalis and mango are just some of the enticing flavours; also light tobacco comes through. This wine is rich and supple with fine fruit sweetness. Nice grip on the palate and a light touch of bitter tannins on the finish. Very individual. Ideal for laying down.

Blossom honey and asparagus in the expansive, sophisticated nose, which becomes even more intense when aired, releasing a veritable fruit salad aroma. A slightly more subtle palate, juicy and extra sweet, with fine and intricate accents, resinous undertones with a mellifluous and almost fervid note, perfectly absorbed by the acid blend.
